To decide where to go and what to see can be exhausting.
My advice, define TIME and MONEY first! They are the variables that influence the most and that can allow you to visit one place or not.

Search about the country or the city trying to understand if it's interesting for you or not.
Try to ask people that had already visited the place if it's worth it or not. Check some blogs, vlogs, etc.
You will need to know how long will you stay in each place, at least in the country. You'll need that for your Visas.
Entering a country by air or by land can have different implications, make sure you know how long you are able to stay in the country legally. Sometimes when entering a country by air, they can ask for your return ticket and it is really mandatory that you have one, otherwise they can refuse your entry.
If you don't want to book your return ticket there is a website where you can rent a ticket for 24h for 10 dollars. On Flyonward, the service provides you proof of onward travel so that you don't need to pay for expensive fares upfront.
It's a very personal decision to plan everything or just go with the flow.
One last advice, quality is more important than quantity.
To be jumping from a place to another one all the time makes it impossible to enjoy the destination. When you are travelling you are always moving but it's important to be able to feel at home from time to time and really understand and embrace the new culture and context you are experiencing.
