Leiden, Netherlands | One Day Tour in "Little Amsterdam"

Leiden is a familiar city 30km away from Amsterdam.

The easiest way to get there is to catch a flight to Shipol Airport and get the train to Leiden Centraal. The city is quite small so it’s possible to see everything by foot. When I visited Leiden I stayed in Hotel Minerva, in a 4 people room in the last floor, with a quite “dolly” decoration and a window the opened to see the canals along the city.

My purpose in Leiden city was to attend an international dance festival happening that weekend. The city has a very young environment, mainly students. A full day is more than enough to visit all the important places in the city and some stops just to relax and check out the rhythm of the locals.

How to get there: from the Schipol airport there’s slow and fast trains every 15 minutes to the Leiden Centraal

Try at least one of the thousand ice cream flavours available in local shops, delicious and very cheap, around 1,25€.

Don’t miss tasting the several types of beer cause the food is nothing special. You can try the typical meatballs, they are ok.

Nightlife doesn’t exist on the streets, you’re only option after 1am is a club. Bars and restaurants serve the last round at 00h30 am.

Budget:

Flights: ~ 200€ Porto --> Lisbon --> Amsterdam --> Porto | You can get the tickets for around 100€ if you buy it 2 month before

Hotel: 110€ for 4 nights in a shared bedroom with bathroom + Breakfast

Meals: average value for a basic meal like a hamburguer is around 10€. If you want real meat or fish the value will increase to the double pp.

Touristic activities: 20€

Leiden is a very good location to discover if you are looking for a smaller Amsterdam, still with lots of young people and a very good energy!
